Tips for Selecting a Labor Doula

Tips for selecting a doula

Choosing a Doula is just one thing that expectant parents may consider as they navigate the process of planning for the birth of their child. With the right guidance, selecting a doula can be fun and exciting. To help make this process enjoyable we have outlined tips to help you know what to consider and what to ask potential doulas.

Doula Education and Experience

Doulas have to go through a certification process which involves education, demonstrating competency in labor skills and attending births. The more experience a doula has, the more likely it is that they have helped families through various birthing situations and birth plans. Childbirth is not always predictable and having an experienced doula can make a difference in the event that your birth takes an unexpected turn.

Doula Availability

You may have a specific doula in mind because you worked with them before or they were recommended by a friend. The idea that your doula has other clients who are also due around your due date may discourage you from choosing them as your primary doula. It’s important to know that we always have backup doula’s that you can meet with and often your preferred doula (if she was already booked) will agree to take you on as a client if you are agreeable to a backup doula in the event she is unavailable.

Birth Team & Doula Compatibility

Any expert that you talk to will tell you that the most important factor when selecting a doula is that the vibe is right! It’s so important to trust your gut and your instincts. The main purpose of a doula is to help the you feel more comfortable, confident, and supported. The best experiences happen when the whole birth team is on the same page and the vibe is perfect!

Here are some questions to ask when interviewing a doula:

  1. What kind of training do you have?
  2. Have you taken part in any continuing education programs?
  3. What is your philosophy about birth?
  4. How would you describe your doula style?
  5. Why did you become a doula?
  6. How do you most often support women in labor?
  7. Are you available for my estimated due date?
  8. Do you have a back-up doula?
  9. Do you know my midwife/doctor?
  10. How long do you stay after I’ve had my baby?
  11. What’s your doula super-power?
  12. Do you support both natural and medicated birth plans?
  13. Will you labor with me at home before going to the hospital/birth center? (if applicable)
  14. Are you comfortable advocating for me?
